about

In 2002 John Rolodex released Dragon EP, his debut release on Dread Recordings. With its thundering basslines, earth-shattering drops and breakneck drum work, the release received widespread support throughout drum and bass and cemented Rolodex’s name in the genre. Alongside collaborator Cartridge, Rolodex delivered an EP that was reverent of classic jungle and techstep but innovative in its delivery. The vinyl-only full-artwork double pack EP rapidly sold out multiple pressings.

Two of the more sought-after cuts are the title track and “Hard Rain,” and now for the first time these tracks are being made available digitally. However, these are not simply remastered versions. Both tracks have been meticulously mixed down from scratch using the original samples and modern techniques. The new mixdowns have been lovingly mastered by drum and bass legend and frequency scientist T.Power at RM Mastering.

“Dragon” is an amen tearout affair of the highest potency. A roaring reese bass tears a hole through the night air. Classic hoover stabs lend a nostalgic flair. In the breakdown, a vocal sample foreshadows what’s to come: “He’s close, man. He’s real close.” Previously credited as a solo track, Cartridge has been given feature credit for his contribution to the drum kit.

“Hard Rain” readily fulfils the promise of its namesake. Heavily distorted 808s fit to shake an entire municipal area are paired with a smashing stepping break. Innovatively-processed breakbeat fills punctuate the narrative. The storm makes way momentarily for sunny blue skies in a lush pad-soaked breakdown, only to give way to another onslaught at the second drop.

Approaching two decades since their initial recording, these tracks offer a view inside the minds of two hungry young Canadian artists eager to make a contribution to the pantheon of classic drum and bass music.
